Does it rain a lot in New York City? ›

According to the Köppen climate classification, the climate of New York City is humid subtropical (Cfa), with parts of the city transitioning into a humid continental climate. (Dfa). The city experiences moderately cold, somewhat wet and snowy winters; and hot, humid summers with plentiful rainfall all year round.

Deep in winter, January is the coldest month of the year in New York thanks to its continental climate.

In the first few weeks of the month, the average temperature is 70°F / 22°C degrees, with the highs reaching 85°F/29°C degrees during the day and the lows around 65°F/18°C degrees at night. The last week of July is historically the hottest, with highs that sometimes even reach 100°F / 35° C degrees.

The annual average temperature across the state ranges from around 39 °F (4 °C) over the Adirondack Mountains to near 53 °F (12 °C) across the Hudson Valley and Long Island, to around 56 °F (13 °C) within New York City.

Fairbanks, Alaska

With a minimum average temperature of about minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit, Fairbanks takes the cake as the coldest city in the U.S. The northernmost major city in Alaska, Fairbanks has seen record cold temperatures reaching minus 66 degrees in the past.

The hottest day in New York metro area based on data from Central Park was July 9, 1936, when temperatures reached a brain-melting 106 degrees.

January is the coldest month in New York City. The daily mean temperature in January is 32.6 °F (0.3 °C). However, temperatures of 10° F (−12° C) or less can occur several times each winter while on the other hand, mild spells to 50°F (10 °C) or more occur several days each winter month as well.

Late Spring is one of the best times to visit the city; however, April and May are two of the rainiest months of the year, both of which typically have around 15 rainy days and accumulate over four inches of precipitation each.

In inland New York, precipitation is most intense in the summer. In coastal areas, precipitation is most intense during late spring and early fall. Over the past 100 years or so, fall precipitation increased the most. Spring and winter precipitation did not change significantly.
